Borovets is Bulgaria's oldest ski resort and the nearest one to the capital. Because it is only about 75 km from Sofia Airport, getting there is far quicker than to Bansko or Pamporovo — often little more than an hour. Here is how the options stack up.

Private transfer
A private transfer is the fastest and simplest option. The driver meets you at arrivals with a name board, loads the skis and suitcases and drives straight to your hotel or the gondola. Because Borovets is compact, drop-off is genuinely at the door.
The price is per vehicle, so for a family or a group of friends it is usually cheaper per person than shared shuttle seats — and you leave when you land, not when the shuttle fills. A 9-seat van carries up to 8 passengers with room for equipment; a trailer covers a full group kit.
Shared shuttle
Seasonal shared shuttles run from Sofia Airport to Borovets a few times a day in winter. You pay per seat, which is economical for one or two people, but you wait for the vehicle to fill and stop at several hotels on arrival.
Public bus via Samokov
There is no direct airport bus. Buses to Samokov leave from Sofia's bus stations (you first need the metro or a taxi to reach them). From Samokov, Borovets is another 10 km — a short local bus or taxi ride. It works on a budget with light luggage, but expect 2.5 – 3.5 hours in total and limited space for ski bags.
Taxi
A pre-agreed taxi fare to Borovets is usually in the 70 – 100 EUR range. If you're paying a fixed price anyway, a booked transfer with a known company, flight tracking and a guaranteed vehicle is the better version.
The route
The transfer runs on road II-82 to Samokov, then road III-621 up to Borovets — about 75 km, roughly 1h15. In winter, allow up to 1h45 because of traffic through Samokov and snow on the final climb. The last stretch into the resort is steep; this is where local winter driving experience counts.
Which to choose
- Family or group: private transfer — quickest, and usually cheapest per head.
- Solo or couple, budget-minded: shared shuttle.
- Backpacker with time and light luggage: bus to Samokov, then local transport.
- Late or early flight: private transfer — the only one on your schedule.
